I spent a lot of time at my first nanny families home. It was a 30+ year old recently divorced mother with a 2 year old. I covered date nights or just mama needs a break moments (Those are definitely acceptable). One evening we were hanging on the couch having our pre-bedtime chat. The question arose as to why my skin was darker than hers. Totally taken by surprise, I utilized this as a life long teaching experience. I explained the skin tones of my parents and how my skin tone id a mix of theirs. I then asked her is she closer to mommy or daddy's skin tone. It challenged her mind to see that she too was a blend of both tones. I continued the conversation by speaking on individuality (never too early to plant seeds) and how we are all the same regardless of our skin tone.
